### Primary Mathematics

#### Fundamental Years

Primary 1 programmes aim to familiarise your child with the academic and social conditions that are part of Primary school. Learning is informed by a strong sense of interest-building and helping your child to expand his or her awareness of people, places and things that are part of primary school curriculum as well as the wider world around him or her.

Learning mathematical concepts and arithmetic skills should be fun and help your child to cultivate a love for math. Through lesson materials, hands-on activities and performance tasks, your child will also acquire useful life skills such as telling time and counting money. Find out more.

Content Mastery
• Students will master foundational concepts in Number Sense, Four operations, Ordinal Numbers, Money, Length, Time, 2D Shapes, Patterns, and Picture Graphs.
• Students will solve word problems on Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Ordinal Numbers and Money.
Skills and Techniques
• Students will present word problems pictorially by drawing part-whole and comparison models.
• Students will apply heuristics including Make A List, Find A Pattern and Restate the Problem in problem-solving.
• Students will use informal units of measurement to order object based on length and ordinal position.

Applied Learning

#### Fundamental Years

Primary 2 programmes introduce your child to key concepts needed for middle primary school years. Your child will work on mastering the basics of each subject while exploring various topics that help them make a real connection between what they learn in school and the world around them. Communication, presentation of ideas and interaction with others remain an integral part of learning and development.

At Primary 2, your child will start to learn more complex word problems and the relevant heuristics to solve.

Content Mastery
• Students will master new topics such as Fractions, Volume, Mass and 3D shapes.
• Students will solve new word problems on Fractions, Volume, Mass and Time.
• Students will solve word problems involving gap and difference and sets.
Skills and Techniques
• Students will present word problems with more complex comparison models including stack model.
• Students will apply heuristics including Guess and Check, Working Backwards and Grouping in problem-solving.
• Students will use metric units of measurement to order objects based on length, mass, and volume.
• Students will develop critical thinking skills through topical challenging problems.
Applied Learning
• Students will use manipulatives such as clocks and weighing scales to carry out performance tasks in class.
• Students will reinforce concepts learned through card games and takeaways.
• Students will appreciate the real-life application of Math through arts, crafts, and presentations such as learning about the world’s longest rail tracks and presenting the designed locomotive in class based on the concepts of length, speed, and capacity.

#### Key Growth Years

Middle primary school years are about mastering component-based skills whilst honing learning sensibilities like refinement, precision, self-evaluation and time management. Our programmes aim to achieve these goals whilst continually expanding your child’s academic knowledge in each subject.

Our primary 3 Math programme transitions from strengthening foundational knowledge gained at the lower primary levels to bridge the gap for upper primary by introducing advanced word problems.

Content Mastery

• Students will master new topics such as Number Patterns, Area and Perimeter, Angles, Parallel and Perpendicular Lines, and Bar Graphs.
• Students will solve new word problems on Number Patterns, Area and Perimeter and Bar Graphs.
• Students will solve word problems involving comparison of multiple quantities, constant total, constant difference, unchanged quantity, equal stage, excess and shortage.

Skills and Techniques

• Students will apply heuristics including Complex Model Drawing, Make A Supposition and Form Equations in problem-solving.
• Students will use folded paper and set squares to check for right angles.
• Students will use set squares and ruler to draw parallel and perpendicular lines.
• Students will develop critical thinking skills through topical challenging problems and GEP handouts.

Applied Learning

• Students will explore and sharpen their spatial sense by working with a set of takeaway puzzle with colored cubes.
• Students will reinforce concepts learned and the relation to core values through classroom games and activities such as participating in a class action after learning the concept of money.
• Students will appreciate the real-life application of Math through data collection and presentation such as learning about Singapore food imports and presenting their daily food intake based on the concept of bar graphs.

#### Key Growth Years

Your Primary 4 child should focus on refining key learning skills that help him or her to apply knowledge mastery. This year is about setting clear academic and personal growth goals that put your child instead of for managing upper primary.

Primary 4 Math curriculum expands on topics learned in P3 with an increasing level of complexity. Your child will also be introduced to new topics which require the application of prior knowledge and the ability to make new connections.

#### Content Mastery

• Students will master new topics such as Factors and Multiples, Decimals and Symmetry.
• Students will expand their knowledge on basic arithmetic to rounding off and four operations of decimals.
• Students will build upon fundamental topics such as Fractions, Area and Perimeter and Geometry.
• Students will solve word problems involving equal fractions, redistribution and part-whole relationship involving remainder value(s).

#### Skills and Techniques

• Students will apply heuristics such as Branching, Number, Value and Unitary Method in problem-solving.
• Students will use a protractor to measure and draw angles.

#### Applied Learning

• Students will learn and apply new skills through project-based learning, such as using the 8-point compass and other geometric properties to locate points on a map.
• New concepts will be reinforced through board games, online games and card games, such as War of Numbers, which requires students to match decimals and fractions of equal value.
• Students will appreciate the real-life application of Math through presentations as well as arts and crafts, such as cutting out symmetrical snowflakes from origami paper.

#### Critical Years

Your child is making his or her preparations for the PSLE exams. In this year, programmes focus on sharpening your child’s focus on academic goals and exam skills. This year is about helping your child to pace himself or herself whilst empowering him or her to master key examination components.

Your child will start preparing for PSLE. The Primary 5 Math curriculum equips students with a strong foundation of key topics tested at PSLE.

#### Content Mastery

• Students will master new topics such as Percentage, Ratio, Area of Triangles, Rates, Average and Volume.
• Students will see the connection of new topics such as Percentage and Ratio with Fractions.
• Students will solve word problems involving units and parts, part-whole relationship with working backwards, common difference resulting from overlapping regions.
• Students will be exposed to new question trends involving logical reasoning and real-world applied learning.

#### Skills and Techniques

• Students will apply heuristics such as Tabulation, Multiple Equations, and Complex Unitary Method.
• Students will construct geometrical shapes on square grids.
• Students will get accustomed to using a calculator in solving questions for Paper 2.

#### Applied Learning

• Students will explore and hone their logical reasoning skills through puzzles.
• Students will reinforce new concepts learned through card games and online games, such as Ratio Tug-of-War, which requires students to come up with correct values to match a given ratio.
• Students will appreciate the real-life application of Math through videos and infographics, such as ‘Containerific’, which provides real-life examples of volume and capacity in the shipping industry.

#### Critical Years

In the PSLE year, students will meet the challenge of revising content knowledge accumulated from Primary 3 to Primary 6 whilst preparing for a series of examinations leading up to the national exam. Our Primary 6 programmes place a strong emphasis on evaluative learning and giving students the best academic and learning support to hone strengths and work on areas of progress.

In this important examination year, your child will be supported in his or her efforts to consolidate content knowledge and apply exam-centric skills with a focus on speed and accuracy in the exams.

Content Mastery
• Students will review topics from P1 to P5 and tackle new topics such as Algebra, Circles, Speed, Solid Figures and Pie Charts.
• Students will be exposed to noteworthy PSLE questions during revision.
Skills and Techniques
• Students will be trained to apply various heuristics to solve complex word problems involving multiple topics/concepts and tackle non-routine problems.
• Students will learn techniques for checking answers such as checking for reasonableness and working backwards.
• Students will analyze and reflect on how to apply the most efficient techniques for exams and to avoid errors.
• Students will be trained in other examination skills such as proper time management, effective stress management techniques and neat presentation of solutions.
Revision and Reinforcement
• Students will evaluate their content mastery through a series of quizzes and topical tests that include questions that test foundational knowledge and examination questions.
• Students will consolidate and revise concepts and key topics via concept maps, revision handouts, and mock paper practices.
