SMART Preparatory Course for GCE ‘O’ Level provides a comprehensive programme that equips students with the necessary learning competencies that prepare them for the annual examination of the joint awarding authorities- Ministry of Education, Singapore and the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Levels.

The strong foundation of this programme lies on the series of internal assessments namely: Mid-Year and Preliminary Examinations, which are facilitated by the Department once in the Academic Year for the respective examination cycle. These assessments are carefully designed and prepared by the internal and competent assessors of the department, to gauge the readiness of the students for the actual examination.

Local Students (12/24-months Programme)

The private candidates’ registration exercise GCE N(T)-, N(A)-, O and /or A-Level examination(s) will commence in April. 

Admission Pre-Requisites

• At least 15 years old as of 1st January of the examination year.
• Applicants should meet one of these additional requirements:

  • Completed Secondary 2 education (or equivalent) with Pass (at least C6 and above) in English and Mathematics, OR Passed SMART EXCEL entrance test

Course Details

• A full-time course runs 5 days in a week with each day lasting 6 hours. Therefore, all Singaporean applicants who intend to enroll into a full-time GCE N(A) or O-Level preparatory course will need to get the approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE). Applicants will register directly to MOE through SEAB’s Candidates’ Portal.

• Any Singaporean male applicant who wants to defer from full-time national service must be enrolled as a full-time student. Such an application will need to be approved by the MOE first. Do take note that the approval of NS deferment is at the discretion of the Ministry of Defence.

• Admission is subject to approval of the SMART EXCEL management.

International Students (12-months programme)

Note: Students who do not meet the pre-requisite admission criteria must obtain approval from the school’s Principal prior to admission. 

Assessment 

Students are assessed by means of oral and written tests and examinations during the course. Upon completion of the course, students will sit for the external GCE ‘O’ level test conducted by SEAB.

• Oral examination: July/August
• Practical & written examination: October to November
• There are Science Practical Exams for ‘O’ Level

Teaching and Learning

This programme is delivered by a team of dedicated and qualified teachers. The lessons are held in the classrooms. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes

All students are expected to register for their GCE ‘O’ Level Examination online at www.seab.gov.sg.

Mode of Assessment

[A] Internal Assessment – All internal assessments will be in the form of written papers

1. 1. For the 12-months programme, 4 Examinations will be conducted
   2.  For the 24-months programme, 8 Examination will be conducted. 

[B] External Assessment – GCE ‘O’ Level Examination (www.seab.gov.sg)

1. 1. Registration for GCE ‘O’ Level Examination is in March. 
   2. Mother Tongue Listening Comprehension and Oral Examination will from June to July. 
   3. English Listening Comprehension and Oral Examination is in August. 
   4. Examinations for all other subjects will be held from October to November. 
   5. Students will sit for a preliminary examination at SMART EXCEL in preparation for the actual exam. 

Type of Qualification 

• Certification of Completion awarded by SMART EXCEL, after fulfilling attendance requirements for completion of course. 
• Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Certificate awarded by Ministry of Education, Singapore and Cambridge Assessment International Education, after successful completion of GCE ‘O’ Level Examination. 

Requirements for Completion of Course

• International Students must achieve at least 90% attendance and must not be absent for more than 7 consecutive days without valid reasons. 
• Local Students (Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents), Dependent’s Pass and Long-Term Pass holders must achieve at least 75% attendance and must not be absent for more than 7 consecutive days without valid reasons. 

12 Months (Full-Time) – 6 Subjects

24 Months (Full-Time) – 6 Subjects

IMPORTANT: 

The full fee must be paid at least 5 days before the practical session to confirm your attendance as a lot of preparation is needed for practical coupled with very limited class size.

PLEASE NOTE IF YOU ARE ABSENT FOR A LAB SESSION, A PENALTY OF $50 MUST BE PAID TO POSTPONE THIS LAB TO ANOTHER SESSION, AND ONLY 1 POSTPONEMENT IS ALLOWED FOR EACH LAB, ELSE THE LAB IS CONSIDERED COMPLETED AND PAID FOR, AND NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN. THE FEE FOR THE MISSED LAB CANNOT BE USED FOR ANOTHER LAB.
