SMART Preparatory Courses for international students seeking admissions into government schools for academic levels from primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 1 - 3 in the following academic year, are specially designed to prepare foreign students seeking admission into local mainstream government schools.

In this preparatory course, extra emphasis is being placed on building your proficiency of the English language as well as application of Mathematics so that our students will be equipped with a strong foundation that will thoroughly prepare them for the required entry tests prior to admission into government schools. Students can expect to undergo daily intensive lessons to not only learn about the necessary academic knowledge but pick up examination skills as well.

Preparatory Course For Admission into Government Schools

The Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) is for international students seeking admissions to Primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 1 to 3 in the following academic year.

The AEIS typically starts in July. Successful applicants start school in January the following year.

During this admissions exercise, international students:

  • Apply to take the relevant AEIS tests.
  • Take the AEIS tests.
  • Receive their admissions outcome.


Admission is not guaranteed and is subject to your child’s performance in the tests. If successful, placement will be based on the available vacancies in our schools and your declared residential area, where possible.

Applicants who are interested to take part in the AEIS will have to create their individual account in the Candidates Portal (CP) before applying for the AEIS tests. Find out how to do so in our user guide(479KB).

Important information for overseas applicants

You should submit an application only if the applicant is able to enter Singapore. You may refer to the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) websites for the latest travel and health measures before entering Singapore.

1️⃣ From July 2023 : Apply for and take CEQ Test

Before the AEIS, primary school applicants must take the relevant Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) test run by Cambridge Assessment English (CAE).

  • When
    12 months before the submission month of the AEIS application. For the 2023 AEIS, your child must take the CEQ test from July 2022.
  • What
    The paper-based or computer-based CEQ test suitable for your child’s age.
  • Where
    At a CAE-authorised exam centre in any country.

When booking the test, check if the result will be released in time for your AEIS application.

 

2️⃣By July 2024 : Receive CEQ Test Result

  • Your child must meet the required Cambridge English Scale (CES) score in their CEQ test before submitting an AEIS application.
  • Their CEQ result must be uploaded during the AEIS application.

3️⃣Tue, 16 July to Mon, 29 Jul 2023 : Apply to take AEIS – Primary Mathematics Test

If your child has met the required CES score in the CEQ test, they can apply to take the relevant AEIS Mathematics test.

Submit an online application in the Candidates Portal (CP) by 12pm on Monday, 29 July 2024. Applications may close early when all places for the AEIS test are filled.

4️⃣ September 2024 : Receive Entry Proof

If your application is approved and payment is successful, you will receive an email informing you to download your child’s entry proof from the CP.

 

5️⃣Thu, 12 Sep 2024 : Take AEIS-Primary Mathematics Test

Your child will take the test in Singapore on Thursday, 12 September 2024.

6️⃣December 2024

📌Release of Outcome

Based on your child’s performance in the test, they may be offered a place in a school. You can check the outcome online.  

📌Report to school

Successful applicants must report to the offered school within the reporting period. If not, their place may be offered to other applicants

 

7️⃣ January 2025

  • Primary 2/3 test on Tuesday, 21 February 2023
  • Primary 4/ test on Tuesday, 21 February 2023
  • Secondary 1, 2 test on Wednesday, 22 February 2023

Applications for the 2023 S-AEIS open on Tuesday, 10 January 2023.

The 2023 AEIS has closed. The application period for the 2024 AEIS, for admission in 2025, will start in July 2024. Tests will be conducted in September or October 2024. These periods are tentative; details will be available here by July 2024.

From 2022 AEIS, SEAB will no longer offer the AEIS-Primary English Exam for international students seeking admission into our primary schools.

Students must take the relevant Cambridge English Qualification (CEQ) test run by Cambridge Assessment English (CAE), and meet or exceed the required scores before they register for the AEIS-Primary Mathematics test.

There is no change in format for the AEIS-Secondary tests.

International Students (Student’s Pass holders) must achieve at least 90% attendance and not be absent for more than 7 consecutive days without valid reasons.

All internal examinations will be in the form of written papers. A total of 2 Continual Assessments will be conducted.

🔸 ENGLISH TEST🔸 MATHEMATICS TEST
The English test comprises 34 multiple-choice questions on comprehension and language use.

Your child will be given 1 hour to complete the test:

(1) Comprehension based on 2 passages (6 items)
(2) Comprehension cloze based on 2 passages (10 items)
(3) Vocabulary (5 items)
(4) Grammar (5 items)
(5) Spelling (8 items)

The Mathematics test comprises 2 parts. Your child will be given 25 minutes to complete Part 1 and 40 minutes to complete Part 2:

Part 1: Multiple-choice questions (29 items)
Part 2: Short-answer questions (17 items)
The use of calculators is not allowed. For short-answer questions, your child will have to show the method of solution clearly by writing their working steps in the spaces provided in addition to providing the final answers.

Primary 4/5

🔸 ENGLISH TEST🔸 MATHEMATICS TEST
The English test comprises 2 parts.

Your child will be given 2 hours to complete Part 1 and Part 2. The paper is taken in a single sitting:

PART 1: Writing
2 topics are set, one of which comes with a picture. Your child has to choose 1 topic and write a composition of at least 100 words on it.

PART 2: Comprehension and language use.
50 compulsory multiple-choice questions comprising:

(1) Comprehension based on 2 passages (10 items)
(2) Comprehension cloze based on 2 passages (12 items)
(3) Vocabulary (14 items)
(4) Grammar (14 items)

The Mathematics test comprises 2 parts. Your child will be given 35 minutes to complete Part 1, and 50 minutes to complete Part 2:

Part 2: Short-answer questions (8 items) and open-ended questions (6 items).
The use of calculators is not allowed. For short-answer and open-ended questions, your child will have to show the method of solution clearly by writing their working steps in the spaces provided in addition to providing the final answers.

Generally, open-ended questions require longer and more complex method of solutions as compared to short-answer questions.

Secondary 1/2/3

🔸 ENGLISH TEST🔸 MATHEMATICS TEST
Your child will be given 2 hours 10 minutes to complete the test which comprises 2 parts:

PART 1: Writing
2 topics are set for Sec 1 test, and 4 topics are set for Sec 2 and Sec 3 tests.

Your child have to choose 1 topic and write a composition on it:
. 200 to 300 words for Sec 1 test.
. 250 to 350 words for Sec 2 test.
. 300 to 400 words for Sec 3 test.

PART 2: Comprehension and language use.
50 compulsory multiple-choice questions comprising:

(1) Comprehension based on 2 passages (15 items)
(2) Comprehension cloze based on 2 passages (15 items)
(3) Vocabulary (10 items)
(4) Grammar (10 items)

The Mathematics test comprises 2 parts. Your child will be given 30 minutes to complete Part 1, and 1 hour 45 minutes to complete Part 2:

Part 1: Multiple-choice questions (34 items).
Part 2: Short-answer questions (20 items) and open-ended questions (10 to 15 items).
The use of calculators is not allowed. For short-answer and open-ended questions, your child has to show the method of solution clearly by writing their working steps in the spaces provided in addition to providing the final answers.

Generally, open-ended questions require longer and more complex method of solutions as compared to short-answer questions.

If your child is seeking admission to a primary school, they must:

(1)   Take the relevant paper-based Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) test run by Cambridge Assessment English (CAE).
The test must be taken within 12 months before the month of submission of their AEIS application. For example, if you are submitting your child’s AEIS application in July 2022, they must have taken the CEQ test in or after August 2021.

(2)    Meet or exceed the required Cambridge English Scale (CES) score (listed below) in the CEQ test before they apply to take the AEIS-Primary Mathematics test appropriate for their age. 

Note 

  • Your child must generally be of the age listed below as at 1 January in the year of admission. 
  • All courses are conducted on a Full-Time basis.  
  • Your child should not be more than 2 years older than the appropriate age for that level.
  • International students who were formerly studying in mainstream schools should approach MOE Customer Service Centre for assistance.

  • There is no change in format for the AEIS-Secondary tests.

The application periods for the 2022 AEIS are as follows:

  • AEIS-Primary – From Wednesday, 27 July 2022 to Friday, 26 August 2022.
  • AEIS-Secondary – From Wednesday, 6 July 2022 to Wednesday, 3 August 2022.

Applications may close early when all places for the admissions tests are filled. 

 

You can apply for the AEIS through the following steps:

  1. Create your individual account in the Candidates Portal (CP).
  2. Upon successful creation of your CP account, you can apply for the 2022 AEIS during the respective application period.
  3. You will need to upload the following documents in the CP during the application period:
    • Your child’s birth certificate. If it is in other languages, you have to submit an accurate English translated copy.
    • Your child’s passport with validity of at least 6 months.
    • Your child’s statement of results for the relevant Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) test taken within 12 months before the month of submission of their AEIS-Primary online application. There is no need to submit the Cambridge English certificate. 
    • Your child’s passport size photo.
  4. Make payment for the fees through the preferred mode of credit or debit card during your online application. You can also pay through PayNow.
  5. Check the status of your application and test details regularly in your CP account.

 

After application

Upon successful submission of your application, you will see your application status reflecting “Pending”.

It will take at least 4 weeks from the day you apply before the status will be updated to “Registered”, if your document submission is in order and your child is assessed to be eligible for the tests. Incomplete document submissions will result in a longer wait time.

You will also receive an email informing you to retrieve your child’s entry proof from the CP.

Enquiries on your application status will not receive any replies. You should refer to the Remarks column in the CP for updates.

If your child has taken the AEIS or S-AEIS and was offered a school place before, you will not be able to apply online again.

Reporting period

Successful applicants must report to their school during the following periods.

  • Primary 2 to 5 and Secondary 2 to 3 students
    From: Thursday, 15 December 2022
    To: Friday, 30 December 2022
  • Secondary 1 applicants
    From: Tuesday, 27 December 2022
    To: Tuesday, 10 January 2023

Applicants who do not report to the offered schools within the reporting periods may have their places offered to other applicants.

Detailed reporting instructions are provided in your outcome letter that you can access in the AEIS-IS.

There will be no school choice and no release of test results. Please note that we will not consider any request for a different school posting or subsequent transfer to another school for successful applicants.

 

Admission requirements

  • If your child is holding a Dependant’s Pass (DP) or Immigration Exemption Order (IEO)
    They do not need to apply for a Student’s Pass (STP). Their admission can be confirmed immediately upon reporting to the offered school.
  • If your child does not have a DP or IEO
    Their admission is subject to them obtaining a STP.

    In this case, your child will receive a STP Registration Acknowledgement Letter (RAL) from the school. You are advised to apply for their STP with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) as soon as possible upon receiving the RAL so that your child can start school as early as possible.

    You may refer to ICA for more information, including the requirements for local sponsorship.
